Can Glycolic Acid Work To Stop Sweat, Give Healthy Hair and Help Skin?

We’ve all heard how Glycolic acid is a powerhouse ingredient in our skincare regimes, but turns out it’s got more uses than we thought possible. Mainly known as a god send in skincare products for those who need exfoliation, it’s now being discovered for a whole load of beauty solutions.

According to Google Trends, global interest in the product has risen by 139% in the last three months, which you can see on the table below. With this in mind, Waleed Taleb, CMO of Vera Clinic, has examined glycolic acid’s benefits for healthy hair and skin.

Let’s take a look at why it’s trending and exactly what more can glycolic do for you?

How glycolic acid promotes healthy hair

Glycolic acid is a water-soluble hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugar cane, according to Verywell Health. In other words, it is a chemical exfoliant that can be used on the scalp to promote healthier hair.

Once applied to the scalp, glycolic acid removes dead skin cells, product build-up, and excess oils, in turn unclogging hair follicles and stimulating hair growth. Healthline also reports that glycolic acid can be used to reduce inflammation.

Start by massaging the acid – a solution that is 5%-10% concentration, into the scalp and leaving it on for 10 to 30 minutes. Always wash it out with a moisturising shampoo and conditioner afterwards. Important: Everyone should conduct a skin test beforehand, always starting with a lower concentration of around 5%, a maximum of once or twice a week to avoid chemical burns.

Glycolic acid for wrinkles, strawberry legs, and hyperpigmentation

In a nutshell, Glycolic acid helps make skin smooth and plump. As a chemical exfoliant, it gently removes the top layer of dead skin without needing extra products or tools.

It can reduce fine lines and wrinkles by boosting collagen production and improving skin elasticity. Since it’s gentler than retinol, glycolic acid is a better option for people with sensitive skin when used in moderation.

This versatile ingredient can also treat common skin issues like strawberry legs and keratosis pilaris. These conditions cause small, rough bumps on the skin and can lead to uneven tone, such as underarm discoloration.

To use, apply a small amount to a cotton pad and swipe it over the problem area. For sensitive skin, use a spray bottle to apply the product evenly—this method works especially well for underarms.

One of the most popular options is The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% which is worth checking out!

Glycolic acid for… feet?!

Say goodbye to cracked, dry heels! The benefits of glycolic acid extend to the feet, as its exfoliating properties remove hard, dead skin from heels.

According to Instagrammer @dermatologysurgeon, glycolic acid also reduces the pH of the skin, which helps with odor. Therefore after applying the product with a cotton pad, be sure to follow with a thick moisturiser and wear socks to lock in the moisture.

Warnings around glycolic acid use

However, Waleed Taleb, CMO of Vera Clinic, warns people against using glycolic acid with other harsh ingredients, such as vitamin C, retinol and other exfoliating acids like lactic acid and salicylic acid.  If applying a glycolic acid based skincare product, such as a cleanser or a serum, it’s good practice to use gentle ingredients in any other complimenting products.

Our advice here would be if you were applying a glycolic acid treatment product, like a serum etc, follow with a thick nourishing night cream with natural ingredients, moisturising peptides or hyaluronic acid, instead of any harsher actives.
