Is The Spa at Carden Park The Best Spa Day Experience in the North West?

Searching for the best spa day experience in the North West is something I have dedicated a fair bit of time to – because lets face it, nothing beats a spa day.

Name an ideal birthday or Christmas gift? A spa day. Name a perfect girls day? A spa day. Name one thing right now you need? You get the gist.

When it comes to luxurious spa days in the North West, The Spa at Carden Park sets the gold standard. I’ve been enjoying booking spa days across the North West of the UK for years – and further afield too before I had kids and it was easier to escape! However with living in Cheshire myself, I get asked about North West spas close to Manchester and Cheshire often.

Carden Spa is nestled in the Cheshire countryside, and honestly, this destination offers more than just a spa day—it’s an escape into tranquility, indulgence, and pure bliss. I felt detached from the outside world as soon as I stepped inside and was greeted by the grand entrance.

We recently visited on a rainy winter’s day, and while the weather might dampen other plans, it only enhanced the magic of our spa experience. I’ve only ever had a winter spa day once before, but this visit reminded me that it is 100% recommended. It was cosy, comforting and warming in every way!

Cosy Comforts in the Winter Rain

From the moment we arrived, the soft patter of rain outside set the perfect soundtrack for a day of self-indulgence. You can see the outdoor experience from the top window if you have a look across the restaurant, and it reminds me of a holiday experience. Myself and my husband had a good look before we started our day!

A large outdoor heated pool and numerous bubbling Jacuzzis surrounded by relaxing pods to sit inside and a Bollinger bar make the main attractions – even under a stormy sky!

We headed to the outdoor experiences which felt surprisingly cosy, even in the chill of winter. Imagine stepping into a toasty outdoor sauna, the wood-scented warmth wrapping around you as raindrops dance on the glass. This particular one is a herbal sauna, adorned with dried flowers and herbs allows you to relax while looking out at the greenery.

The contrast between the brisk winter air and the sauna’s heat is definitely a sensory delight that might get overlooked if you’ve never tried this before!

Then there are the outdoor jacuzzis which are an absolute highlight. We dropped our robes quickly and rushed into we the bubbling waters, mulled wine in hand, feeling utterly content. Tip: they have buttons at the side of the jacuzzis where you can call for bar service! In our case, mulled wine got delivered while we soaked up the bubbling water and finally had time to chat. We have two small children so talking together is something we never get chance to do.

When the rain started to fall heavier, we escaped into one of the pods, which has speakers and seating, to dry off and warm up before heading to explore the inside experiences. In the Summer, this would literally feel like you were on holiday, especially with the Bollinger bar serving up prosecco!

And of course, the fire pit area – which is a very beautiful looking spot perfect for relaxing outside with the heat of the fire pit.

A Massage to Remember

Of course, no spa day is complete without a treatment, and although they are an added on luxury, I felt I needed that 60 minutes of wellness. I’m usually obsessed with skincare and jump at a facial opportunity, but this time I needed to look after my poor achy mum body! My massage experience was exactly what I needed, and the Botanical Massage myself and my husband booked let us pick two areas (neck, shoulder and back as one, and legs as my second) to focus on.

My massage therapist was highly skilled, tailoring the massage to my specific needs as I told her about muscular neck pains I have. She made sure to put lots of muscle rub on my neck and shoulders to keep on for the rest of the day (bonus to having our massages as our last point of the day!). The treatment list is extensive, and be warned, it took me a while to read through everything and make my choice. Because wow, there is a lot of choice!

The Spa Facilities: A Perfect Blend of Indoor and Outdoor

The Spa at Carden Park’s facilities are designed to provide a seamless blend of indoor luxury and outdoor escapism. The indoor pool is lovely and warm, with loungers surrounding all looking out at the outdoors. I feel Carden Spa has the edge with it’s indoor offerings, as you don’t just get your standard sauna and steam room, but instead have choices between:

  • Indoor Vitality Pool
  • Heated Relaxation Beds
  • Finnish Sauna
  • Bio Sauna
  • Experience Showers
  • Steam Rooms
  • Ice feature

Plus, the stylish, contemporary interiors really stand out, which give you that premium, almost special feel when you walk inside. You can tell the decor and styling of the spa has been thought through to reflect a modern feel.

Then you have the indoor relaxation rooms, complete with a crackling fire and a sensory screen, depending which mood you want to take on. We enjoyed a good 20 minute lie down in the dark relaxation room with the flickering fire for the cosy vibes. We actually ran out of time to enjoy the relaxation room with panoramic window views of the spa while you wait for treatments – too busy at the indoor pool!

Lunching at The Spa at Carden Park

Lunch was included in our package, in which you have healthy food options to pick. I opted for a lamb dish and my husband chicken, and we added extra fries to share. Along with a drink and sat in our robes, you again have panoramic views of the outdoor spa from high up, making it such a lovely calming environment. The staff were super attentive and the food was delicious.

Why Carden Park Spa Stands Out

This place is hands down my favourite, which is why I felt it deserves a write up of it’s own. Here are a couple of reasons why:

  1. Year-Round Appeal: Whether it’s sunny or rainy, the spa’s experiences adapt beautifully to the season. Yes, it’s main feature is the extensive outdoor facilities, but these somehow worked a treat on a wintery day.
  2. Luxurious Treatments: The massage alone is worth the trip, but the array of treatments on offer ensures something for everyone.
  3. Scenic Beauty: Set in stunning countryside, the views alone are therapeutic.
  4. Location Goals: The Spa at Carden Park is close to Chester, so if we hadn’t had kids to rush off and pick up from nursery, we would have loved an evening trip into Chester!
  5. Stylish and Modern: A lot of spas get dated quickly, but this one has the most contemporary finishings and interior styling that it looks plush and premium.

Despite the drizzle, or perhaps because of it, our day at The Spa at Carden Park was one of the most relaxing and unique experiences we have had! There was something extra special about sipping steaming hot mulled wine in a bubbling outdoor pool, with a little bit of rain on us and rushing off to dry out in the herbal outdoor sauna.

An hour away from many places, like Cheshire East, Manchester and Liverpool, this spa is the one to visit if you’re looking for a North West spa break.

We were absolutely devastated to leave and not head over to the adjoining hotel and stay the night – it was literally a fantastic day!
