A new Black-owned brand has launched a set of hair straighteners that puts Afro, curly, coily, and textured hair types at the forefront of its design. It’s launch questions why manufacturers have previously overlooked this hair type, when launching ranges of hair tools.
Introducing the Silk Tress Hair Straightener from Noma Sana, created specifically to give better care for the most voluminous hair types – typically classed as type 3 or type 4 hair – that are usually overlooked by manufacturers.
Currently Black and Afro hair types are less known and available, among the ‘one size fits all’ approach. The Silk Tress Straightener (£180) features:

We sent the Noma Sana Silk Tress to Toni, our parlor reviewer, who is a perfect fit for this styling tool. This is what she has to say:
“My hair type is a mix of tight curls, really thick in the middle and softer around the sides. I have worn my hair natural for the past year but my ends still show where I have had it texturised in the past- so my roots are much thicker with the regrowth. Just to give context.
I was delighted by all the extra components that came with the straighteners, (some of which I don’t own yet) so massive bonus there. I got a very good quality heat protection glove, 2 hair clips, fine tooth rat tail comb and a wide tooth afro pick comb all amazing quality. I dropped the wide tooth comb a few times in the shower and it didn’t break and also managed to get it through my hair without one of the teeth breaking off!
There was also a bag to store everything in, in a lovely red that matches the colour of the straighteners themselves.
The straighteners were simple to use, just plugged them in and pressed the ‘on’ button and then a scroll around that button would determine heat. Red lights on the sides of the plates indicated the straighteners were on. “
I had mine at 200°, which is shown on the small screen on the side. I loved the fact that you could clip on 2 thin combs on either side of the straightening plates which helped give a nice smoother finish.
(These did fall off once but I managed to get them secure again and then they were fine).
I straightened my hair after blowdrying first, but think these can also be used when hair is still damp, although I was a bit nervous about doing that!
They didn’t snag at all and I think from how thick my hair is naturally they made my hair pretty straight and I was able to keep it like this for a few days. So for me they were a hit!
They gave everything I expect for a hair straightener. The only thing I would say was missing is a mat to lay them on whilst using or a stand and once they get to the desired heat if there was a sound or indication they were ready…but these are minor things to point out.
