Experts at beauty and wellness marketplace Fresha debunk the benefits of hyaluronic acid, as it becomes the latest trending skincare favourite for many.

We all know that TikTok has revolutionised the beauty industry. As it becomes an online home for providing people with a flow of undiscovered beauty hacks, people turn to TikTok for the next beauty obsession. Currently, TikTok-ers can’t stop sharing Hyaluronic Acid tips and tricks, and more recently, ‘Hyaluronic Acid Lips’
So what is this sudden craze that has got everyone searching for #Hyaluronicacidlips? First, a little lesson in our trusty friend HA itself…
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally by the body and is found in the eyes and joints to act as a lubricant to keep them moisturised. Hyaluronic acid is also used to help heal the body after injury as it reduces swelling and speeds up the recovery process.
However, it is also becoming more commonly known as a fantastic skincare ingredient to help reduce signs of ageing and hydrate, revitalise and moisturise your skin.
The acid is a humectant, which means it helps retain moisture in your skin and works to recover any dryer areas, keeping your skin looking radiant and healthy.
The curiosity around hyaluronic acid online has increased drastically since the beauty industry found its feet on TikTok. Online searches for ‘benefits of hyaluronic acid’ have skyrocketed over 274% worldwide over the past month, and hashtags such as #hyaluronicacid on TikTok have surpassed 2.5 billion views.
How do you use hyaluronic acid?
Typical hyaluronic acids are produced and sold in a serum form that you can apply to your face when the skin is damp after cleansing and toning. After this step, you can moisturise as normal, although some moisturisers include hyaluronic acid already, which means it will be the second last step in your routine before sunscreen.

Hyaluronic Acid Lips
The latest method for applying hyaluronic acid is to use it on your lips to revitalise and maintain a soft and supple look. This method has recently become increasingly popular on TikTok, with the hashtag #hyaluronicacidlips hitting over 100 thousand views and #hyaluronicacidlipbalm totalling over 226 thousand views.
- This method of keeping your lips hydrated and plump is done by applying a hyaluronic acid serum to your lips, followed by a layer of your favourite lip balm or mask to seal it in.
If you know a thing or two about using HA for your skin, you’ll know skincare experts recommend applying HA to slightly damp skin, and then applying a moisturiser on top of your HA product to seal it in. So it’s no wonder this HA lip hack is said to work, too.
It is recommended to apply hyaluronic acid to your lips once or twice a day alongside your regular lip balm for at least two weeks to see a significant difference in plumpness. Still, you can also see and feel great results after the first use as the products absorb moisture immediately.

Online searches for ‘natural lip plumper’ have skyrocketed in interest by 1,253% worldwide over the past week (at the time of writing this in January 2024), over 12 times more than the average, proving how keen people are to discover new ways of getting fuller lips more naturally.
Hyaluronic Acid Serums Suitable For Lips
Most Hyaluronic acid serums out there can be applied to the lips, but there are also some that are specifically designed for lip use, which is always advised if you are unsure. The below are some highly rated HA serums which when applied to the lips, should give you a plumper pout when finished off with a coating of lip balm.
1. The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

An intensely hydrating serum, the Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Hydration Support Serum by The Ordinary is well-known across the beautysphere. It’s loved for providing a concentrated dose of hyaluronic acid, the formula that draws in moisture and helps to retain it for longer. Designed for the skin, repeated use will help the skin to appear plumper, smoother and fine lines are noticeably softened. There is no reason why it can’t do similar for the lips, too!
2. VICHY Minéral 89 Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum

The award-winning VICHY Minéral 89 Hyaluronic Acid Serum is one of the most popular Hyaluronic Acid serums, which has been approved by the British Skin Foundation too. You can smother this hydrating serum all over the face and lips, drenching both with long-lasting moisture using a minimalist 11-ingredient formulation.
It’s a lightweight gel texture serum that creates a soothing veil upon application, helping to support the skin’s natural barrier and defend against pollutants.
3. Revolution 2% Pluming and Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Renowned for its hydrating benefits, and also fast becoming known as a competitive product to The Ordinary’s HA serum, Revolution Skincare’s 2% Hyaluronic Acid Plumping & Hydrating Solution is another great powerhouse product. This lightweight serum powered by hyaluronic acid protects against feelings of dryness and tightness, and quenches and cools the complexion, making it a fabulous choice for those who feel their complexion is ‘parched’.
Ideal for use before makeup, you can apply this silky serum to the face – and lips for the purpose of this article – to plump, diminish the look of fine lines and even out texture for a soft and supple result.
