Why Use An Exfoliating Toner? COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Toner Review and Tips

When it comes to skincare, the ‘toning step‘ is often overlooked – but it can be a game-changer. A good toner preps your skin after cleansing, balances pH levels, and boosts the absorption of everything you apply afterwards. But not all toners are created equal.

We wanted to explore exfoliating toners in todays write up, so we’ve tried and tested the COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Toner, which has exfoliating acids that refine skin texture and restore glow.

Formulated with AHA (alpha-hydroxy acids) and BHA’s, this toner gently exfoliates the skin’s surface, sweeping away dead skin cells that can cause dullness, congestion, and uneven tone. Unlike harsh scrubs, chemical exfoliation is far more precise and less abrasive – making it a go-to for anyone wanting smoother, brighter skin.

Why we love it

  • Skin resurfacing benefits – Regular use helps unclog pores and smooth texture, leaving skin noticeably more radiant.
  • Boosts product performance – By clearing away dead cells, it allows serums and moisturisers to penetrate more effectively.
  • Balances oil – Both AHA’s and BHA.s help to balance oil production, making this a great choice for oily skin types
  • Gentle but effective – It’s suitable for most skin types, especially normal, oily, or combination. Sensitive skin may want to start slowly (once or twice a week) before building up.
  • 0.1% of AHA Glycolic Acid and BHA Betain Salicylate – gentle enough for all skin types to help remove dullness and dead skin cells.
  • Made with natural ingredients – 10% of Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Water and Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Water.

Who should use it?

If you struggle with dullness, rough patches, or clogged pores, this toner is a brilliant addition to your routine. It’s also a great choice if you want to maintain a healthy glow without relying on heavy-duty exfoliators. Just be sure to pair it with a daily SPF, since AHAs can make skin more sensitive to the sun.

How does it compare to a hydrating toner?

Hydrating toners – like rosewater or mist-style formulas – work mainly to add moisture and refresh the skin. They’re fantastic for layering hydration and giving skin that dewy bounce, but they don’t actively resurface. The COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Toner goes deeper, providing exfoliation and renewal rather than just hydration. Ideally, both can sit in a routine: a resurfacing toner like this one a few times a week, with a hydrating toner daily to keep skin plump and soothed.

How to use the COSRX AHA/BHA Exfoliating Treatment Toner

  1. Cleanse first – Always apply onto freshly cleansed skin.
  2. Mist onto the face directly or onto a cotton pad – just a few spritz pumps is all you need
  3. Start slow – Begin with 2–3 times per week, then increase frequency as your skin adjusts.
  4. Follow with hydration – Layer on serums and moisturiser to lock in benefits.
  5. Never skip SPF – Because AHAs increase sun sensitivity, daily SPF is a must.

The result? This toner didn’t irritate or cause any redness/sensitivity from the first day, and mainly contributed to a refreshed, smoother complexion that I can tell is fighting to have some brightness. I apply a treatment serum a minute after the toner (usually vitamin c in the morning, and a niacinamide in the evening) and continue my skincare as normal. I do, however, make sure to avoid any AHA’s and BHA’s in the products I apply afterwards, as not to overload my skin with acids.

There’s something about the ingredients in K-Beauty brands I just love, and this toner has delivered with its excellent balance of actives and natural ingredients. The price seems to change depending on the retailer, but for a 150ml bottle and using around2-4 mist pumps (starting at a couple of times a week and working up) you’re going to get a lot of use out of this!
